Sonic Shifts to Tip-Wage Rate System

October 30th, 2008 · No Comments

New York, NY–Many Sonic Drive-Ins across the United States have shifted from minimum wage rates to tip-wage rates for newly hired carhops in order to cut costs. Among the reasons Sonic has chosen to move to such a system is because carhops see nearly 100% turnover. Sonic claims that switching to a tip-wage rate system will also better service among carhops.

Under the new tip-wage system, carhops make an average minimum of $3.13 with the expectation that tips will help them reach the federal minimum wage rate.

Some have been weary about moving to such a system and feel that offering lowering wages will deter carhops from providing good service.
