Three female brokers from California in the Smith Barney brokerage unit sued Citigroup for sexual discrimination. They alleged managers steered clients to male brokers, did not provide opportunities for women to be partners, and gave women less sales support, less desirable offices, and less training.
The lawsuit was granted class action status and now about 2,500 women are eligible to share in the compensation fund of $33 million. In addition, Citigroup is changing its policies concerning account distribution, partners, and leads. The lawyers of the plaintiffs are set to receive $6.5 of the $33 million. The settlement is the largest since 2004, when Morgan Stanley paid $54 million to deal with similar claims.
