According to statistics released by the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, over 82,700 cases of job discrimination were reported in the United States during fiscal year 2007, up 9% from the previous year. This recent jump marked the largest increase in 14 years.
Of the recorded complaints, race was the biggest factor, accounting for some 30,000 cases and showing a 12% increase from 2006. Even more disturbing was the spike in retaliation from employers against those who complained about discriminatory practices, up 18% from 2006 to reach a total of 26,663 cases.
Federal employment law makes it illegal for employers to discriminate based on age, sex, or race, among other factors. If you feel that you have been the victim of discriminatory practices, call Orange County employment lawyer Perry Smith today at 888-356-2529.
